| Description: | In Bratislava, the Austrian Archduke Matthias was crowned with the Holy Crown II on November 19, 1608. He became king of Hungary under the name Mátyás, and then on May 23, 1611, he became king of Bohemia with the crown of St. Wenceslas. He could only gain the support of the Hungarian orders by sanctioning the free practice of religion, reforming the palatine offices and placing the transfer of serfs under the jurisdiction of the counties. He initially pursued a friendly policy towards the Principality of Transylvania, but twice turned against Gábor Bethlen, so in 1616 the Transylvanian armies ravaged Upper Hungary. II. Mátyás married quite late and had no children. The aging, mentally and physically exhausted ruler was forced to appoint his nephew, Archduke Ferdinand, who was crowned King of Hungary during his lifetime, as his heir in 1617. The 400-year-old Czech coronation medal was made in 1611 to commemorate the Prague ceremony. Original coin: Diameter: 28 mm Weight: 7-10 g Material: gold (Au. 986) Museum Gallery |
