Ethiopia - Federal Republic

Ethiopia's history since 1991 has been marked by significant political, economic, and social change. In May 1991, the communist Derg regime led by Mengistu Haile Mariam fell, and a transitional government was formed under the leadership of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF). A new constitution was adopted in 1995, establishing a federal, ethnically based republic. In the period after 1991, Ethiopia experienced a transitional period in which a multi-party system was established and democratic institutions were established. The EPRDF played a dominant role in politics and won several elections. However, the voice of opposition parties and civil society was also growing stronger.
