Germany - Witten

Witten, a city in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, has a rich and varied past. Although it is not one of the most well-known German cities, its history is full of notable events and developments. The first written mention of Witten dates back to 1214, when it was probably a small settlement on the edge of the Ruhr area. In the Middle Ages, agriculture dominated the area and the city developed slowly. An important moment was the beginning of the 14th century, when an economic boom began thanks to the mills on the banks of the Rur River. The real development of the city began in the 19th century, with the Industrial Revolution. Witten became an important center for coal mining and the steel industry in the Ruhr area. Several mines were opened in the area, and the population of the town grew rapidly as workers arrived in the region. At the same time, the railway network developed, which further strengthened the industrial importance of the city. At the beginning of the 20th century, Witten remained a thriving industrial center. However, World War II caused severe damage to the city, but after the war it was rebuilt and industrial production boomed again. However, in the 1960s, the decline of coal mining in Germany began, which also brought economic difficulties to Witten.

The city of Witten, Germany, did not have its own mint. Although Witten is a historically important city, especially for the Reformation, and was the site of many significant events, it did not have the privilege of minting its own coins. In the Middle Ages and early modern times, the right to mint coins (the so-called "Münzrecht") was usually the prerogative of princes, bishops, or certain free imperial cities. Witten was part of the Electorate of Saxony at this time, so the money circulation there was ensured by the mints of the Electorate. The nearest and most important mints were in Dresden and Leipzig, and coins from these were also in circulation in Witten.
