Australia - Principality of Hutt River

The Hutt River Principality, formerly known as the Hutt River Territory, is Australia's oldest micronation. The principality claims to be an independent, sovereign state, but without international recognition. On 21 April 1970, Leonard Casley, a Western Australian farmer, declared his farm an independent state, the "Hutt River Territory", declaring its independence from the Australian government. The conflict was over grain production quotas, which led Casley to decide to secede from Australia. In 2006, Casley bestowed the title "Prince Leonard" on himself and bestowed peerages on his family. The principality received tens of thousands of visitors each year, and issued stamps, coins, and passports, but these were not officially recognised. Leonard Casley died in 2019, and his son Graeme Casley took over. On August 3, 2020, the principality was officially dissolved and rejoined Australia. The history of the Hutt River Principality is a unique and interesting example of the world of micronations.
